Fighting Suriname pushes Belgium in final group match
Suriname lost the final group stage match at the World Games 2025 in Chengdu 11-15 to Belgium. Despite the defeat, the team delivered a performance to be proud of against a side normally seen as a top contender for silver. With this victory, Belgium also secured the top spot in the group.
At halftime, Belgium led 6-11. After the break, both sides visibly shifted their tactics. Despite their advantage, Belgium did not give Suriname an inch and kept fighting for every ball, while Suriname battled hard for a comeback.
Belgium had roughly 50 percent more shots than Suriname over the course of the game, but in the fourth quarter Suriname even managed to win 3-1. In the second half, there were few goals on either side, which mainly underlined the strong defensive effort of both teams.
With earlier convincing victories of 27-14 against Germany and 26-10 against the Czech Republic, Belgium had already shown its class, but against Suriname it remained a battle right until the end.
