Czech Republic too strong for Suriname this time, focus now on Belgium
After yesterday’s impressive win against Germany, Suriname was unable to secure a second consecutive victory today. The Czech Republic came out on top in Chengdu, winning 19-16. The match started with an early opening goal from the Czechs, who immediately set the tone. The European team decisively opted for long possessions and many long-range shots, a style of play Suriname struggled to counter in the first half.
At halftime, the Czech Republic led 13-9. Throughout the entire match, they were especially accurate from mid-range (9 out of 29). All four penalty shots awarded to the Czech team were successfully converted. Suriname also created plenty of chances but struggled to score from nearby.
In the final five minutes, the tempo increased significantly as Suriname applied as much pressure as possible. By creating as many scoring opportunities as they could, the team tried to close the gap, but the Czech Republic remained calm, kept the ball moving, and minimized mistakes. This was in sharp contrast to the earlier part of the last quarter, when the Czechs seemed primarily focused on running down the clock without taking many risks.
The focus now shifts to Belgium in the final match of the group stage. A historically tough opponent who convincingly defeated the Czech Republic just yesterday. Later today, Germany faces Belgium, and depending on that result, Suriname can still dream of a spot in the semifinals.
It will be a tough challenge, but Team SU will do everything they can to finish the tournament with their heads held high.
