Suriname defeats Germany in a nail-biting match
Today, in the opening match of the group stage at the World Games in Chengdu, Suriname claimed a historic victory by edging out Germany 15-14 in a thrilling encounter. From the very start, it was clear that both teams were evenly matched, a balance reflected in the 8-8 halftime score.
Germany scored most of their goals from long-range shots (6 out of 27), while Suriname ultimately made the difference from close range and through penalties, converting an impressive 4 out of 5, whereas Germany did not receive any penalty opportunities.
In the final phase, both teams launched attack after attack, but the tension led to mistakes, and not all chances were converted on either side. Suriname and Germany had the entire crowd on the edge of their seats as the score remained tied with just half a minute to play. Then, with only 28 seconds left on the clock, Suriname struck the winning goal!
The final whistle sparked pure euphoria as Suriname’s players and staff stormed the court to celebrate the victory in style. Adding an extra festive touch, Wayne Stienstra celebrated his birthday today—and did so with a win that could prove crucial in the remainder of the tournament.
