Fighting Suriname claims fifth place at World Games
Suriname concluded the 2025 World Games in Chengdu with a 14-16 victory over Germany in the battle for fifth place. This result marks an improvement over the previous edition, where the team finished sixth.
The match began evenly, with the score tied at 2-2 midway through the first quarter. Suriname then took a slight lead, carrying a 3-4 advantage into the first break. The second quarter remained tight as well. Germany drew level at 6-6, but Suriname responded immediately and pulled ahead to 7-9 just before halftime.
In the third quarter, Suriname extended the gap to 7-11, but goals remained scarce on both sides. Germany fought back to 11-12 heading into the final quarter. With four minutes remaining, Germany again drew level at 14-14, but Suriname immediately regained the lead at 14-15 and sealed the win with a long shot just 17 seconds before the final buzzer.
Notably, several Surinamese players, including Slot and Stienstra, picked up knocks in the final quarter but pushed through until the last whistle. The result: an impressive fifth-place finish and yet another demonstration that Suriname can compete with strong opponents on the world stage.
